Deployment of urban agriculture in East Lima, Peru.
Urban agriculture in Lima has been promoted by the project Farmers in the city encompassed in the Urban harvest program promoted by the Consultive Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The validation of the effectiveness of the project Farmers in the city can only be confirmed by maintenance over the time the deployment of the project goals. The project Farmers in the city was carried out by the International Potato Center (CIP) and GESPLAN research group of the Technical University of Madrid. The project was conducted at the East Cone of Lima, Peru, from 2006 to 2008. This communication shows the situation 5 years later. In order to know the current situation all the members of Cosanaca producer association, which was created under the project, have been interviewed. Besides, an expert panel was carried out with the responsible of the urban agricultural office of the municipalities that participate in the project. The results show that Cosanaca has duplicated the number of producers and that the municipalities have increased the number of workers
Real-Time Crowd Counting based on wearable Ephemeral IDs
Crowd Counting is a very interesting problem aiming at counting people typically based on density averages
and/or aerial images. This is very useful to prevent crowd crushes, especially on urban environments with
high crowd density, or to count people in public demonstrations. In addition, in the last years, it has become
of paramount importance for pandemic management. For those reasons, giving users automatic mechanisms
to anticipate high risk situations is essential. In this work, we analyze ID-based Crowd Counting, and propose
a real-time Crowd Counting system based on the Ephemeral ID broadcast by contact tracing applications on
wearable devices. We also performed some simulations that show the accuracy of our system in different
situations
Towards Portability of Models for Predicting Students’ Final Performance in University Courses Starting from Moodle Logs
Predicting students’ academic performance is one of the older challenges faced by the educational scientific community. However, most of the research carried out in this area has focused on obtaining the best accuracy models for their specific single courses and only a few works have tried to discover under which circumstances a prediction model built on a source course can be used in other different but similar courses. Our motivation in this work is to study the portability of models obtained directly from Moodle logs of 24 university courses. The proposed method intends to check if grouping similar courses by the degree or the similar level of usage of activities provided by the Moodle logs, and if the use of numerical or categorical attributes affect in the portability of the prediction models. We have carried out two experiments by executing the well-known classification algorithm over all the datasets of the courses in order to obtain decision tree models and to test their portability to the other courses by comparing the obtained accuracy and loss of accuracy evaluation measures. The results obtained show that it is only feasible to directly transfer predictive models or apply them to different courses with an acceptable accuracy and without losing portability under some circumstances
Migration Patterns in Male Great Bustards (Otis tarda)
5 paginas, 1 figura y 1 tableThe Great Bustard (Otis tarda) is distributed from Iberia and Morocco in the west to China in the east and has been considered sedentary in all but the northern and eastern parts of its range (Gewalt 1959, Glutz et al. 1973, Cramp and Simmons 1980). However, some studies have reported seasonal changes in population numbers in different areas in the Iberian Peninsula (Hidalgo and Carranza 1990, Alonso et al.
1995), suggesting that the species is a partial migrant (sensu Terrill and Able 1988) in this region. We describe seasonal movements of marked adult male Great Bustards and discuss observed patterns in relation to the following questions: (1) Do migratory males display interannual fidelity to breeding and postbreeding areas? (2) Do males travel significantly
farther than females in their seasonal movements?
We also suggest several hypotheses that
could explain patterns of partial and differential migration in male Great Bustards. This study is a contribution to DGICYT-project

Evaluation of captive breeding as a method to conserve threatened Great Bustard populations.
6 paginas y 1 tableThe recent Great Bustard Action Plan summarizes de main recommended lines of action to preserve current populations and their habitats in Europe. Among others, captive breeding is mentioned as a method to save clutches found in the field whose hatching success probability is suspected to be low for any reason. Birds hatched from these clutches have been used to either build up small captive-breeding flocks that ensure preservation of the genetic pool of seriously threatened populations once these may be extinct, or to be released into the natural populations as juveniles. In this paper we evaluate the viability of
captive breeding in the light of new results of a recent study of juvenile Great Bustards
during their maternal dependence period, family break-up and dispersal. The few data
available on survival of captive-bred young after being released suggest that they suffer a high mortality, probably due to the lack of the experience acquired in natural conditions from their mothers. The negative effects of imprinting by their human keepers, particularly in relation with display and mating, has not been sufficiently investigated. These and other
aspects make captive breeding questionable as an effective method, as compared with
habitat protection measures.PB94-0068 of the Dirección General de Investigacion Cientifica y TecnicaPeer reviewe
